Important Issues for Design Review II
- Design Review II is to check whether you have a good detailed design
Invite your sponsors!!!
Design Review II is to check your detailed design before prototype
manufacturing. You should give your full draft of report to another
team during your Design Review II presentation.
The team that receives your report will review your design in detail
and vice versa. What you are looking for are any errors or oversights
in the calculations or decision. You must provide a copy of your written
report to your section instructor in two days after the oral presentation.
Requirements for Design Review II
Written Report
This report describes in detail the background to the problem, the design
problem, customer requirements, engineering specifications,
concepts, critical points of the detailed design,
and product development plan. Here is a possible format:
Title Block, Executive Summary, Table of Contents,
Introduction, Specifications, Concept Generation, Concept Selection,
Concept Description: You should modify these sections from Design Review I.
Parameter Analysis: Describe the approach you used to determine the
specific parameters (dimensions, shape, materials, etc) for your design.
Each engineering decision should have some strong basis such as equations
to back it up. An example would be failure/stress analysis. Use the
simplest model possible that will give you the accuracy needed for your
decision. Finite Element Analysis is not normally needed to achieve this.
Show all of the calculations for your decisions. A way to do this section
is to summarize the steps you have taken in detailing your design
and the resulting decisions made and refer to an appendix that contains
the actual calculations that back up your decision.
Final Design: In this section, describe the detailed final design.
This should include a detailed layout drawing with dimensions. In addition,
provide a full description, with drawings, of the operation of your device.
You should have all off-the-shell parts selected along with manufacture,
part number and cost and be ready to order them. ALl parts that will be
made in-house should be identified along with potential materials.
Plan, Problem Analysis, Conclusion, Reference List:
Modify and improve these sections from your Design Review I report.
Oral Report
This is an oral presentation hitting the highlights of the written report.
The format should be similar but more concise. Use good visuals to aid
the listener in understanding. You want to get across what is the problem
and why does it need to be solved, what are the specific engineering
requirements you are going to try to meet, what concept do you plan on
using to meet those requirements and what problems do you foresee in
achieving the requirements or with development of the concept.
- Some Pointers
Organize each of these requirements well and EDIT!!! to
present a clear picture. Part of your grade will be on how well you
present (both written and oral) your report. Be brief but make sure to
present enough information to get the point across so people can
actually help. Expect and ask for criticism: you are here to find your
mistakes while there is time to correct them so be honest and open with
your work.
Use pictures and charts as much as possible to save time and space
but make sure to explain each. Put numerical specifications, information
sources lists, etc. on view graphes, handouts and wall charts. Don't
read them aloud but do give the reviewers time to read them and ask
questions and make comments.
Don't argue, either as a reviewer or when being reviewed: it wastes
time. Try to learn from what other people say rather than trying to prove
then wrong - reviews are for you to learn from others.
Remember that each team member must present orally at least once a term
and it is much better if each presents several times.
- Typical Issues in Design Review II
Parameter Analysis:
What is modeled and at what level?
Is the level of analysis appropriate?
Is the analysis correct?
Has anything been overlooked?
Is more analysis need and if so, what?
What are the driving factors of the design?
how well were they modeled?
Final Design:
What is the final design?
Will it, or will it not work and why?
Is there a better design, if so, what is it?
Are the dimensions for the final design reasonable?
Have all the parts been specified with manufacturer part numbers, etc?
Is the cost reasonable?
Were stock size used and, if not, why not?
Parameter Analysis:
How insightful is the problem analysis?
Are the ways to overcome the problems clearly set out?
Are there problems/issues that have been overlooked? If so, what are
they and how may they be overcome?
General:
Is the project ready to go forward?
Is the plan reasonable and well thought out?
Are there other activities that need to be done and if so, what are they?
How do you plan to test feasibility and performance of the design?
